Curricubits offers integrated curricula that are fully scripted to make it easy for afterschool programs to provide quality content for students, without the expense of providing intensive training for staff. They also keep the environment in mind as they create new products. Camille Diaz, owner and creator of Curricubits says, “We’re working hard to educate children, especially those at risk, in a fun and exciting way so they can be successful in the future. It makes sense to us that we need to think green if we want that future to be a good one.”
Their Green Scene
All Curricubits staff and volunteers work from their homes, avoiding daily commutes and reducing their gasoline consumption and carbon emissions. During the daytime, they use natural light in their workspaces and open the windows instead of running the air conditioner. Communication is done via email and phone to avoid sending out notes and memos. Bills are paid electronically to avoid writing checks. For items they do need to print, the folks at Curricubits each have a stack of half used paper sitting next to their printers ready for printing on the other side.
The Green Products
Curricubits offers their entire curriculum in digital form. There is no printing of extra packets, no unused inventory, and no packaging or shipping of materials. The end user may print the exact number of copies they need for their staff or students (on recycled paper), so they avoid creating unnecessary copies that get thrown away at the end of a lesson.
Many Curricubits activities include directions for instructors on how to build reusable props like the Quizubits Game Board and the Earthquake Simulator. If properly cared for, these props can be used for years. Curricubits lessons are designed to be taught in any order and most of the materials fit into a tub that can be carried by a group leader. This means that afterschool programs with multiple groups can stagger their schedule of activities so that several groups use the same set of materials. This saves the afterschool program money and reduces their carbon footprint.
